truth.

i have some PHENOMENAL girlfriends that recently pulled out all of the stops when i needed it most. they are always awesome but at the moments when you made bad choices that you knew were bad choices and your friends knew were bad choices and you did it anyway and you just need to let others take care of you and let you be pathetic and self deprecating without excessively apologizing or agonizing about being too much...at those moments my girlfriends leave me speechless with gratitude and love.

thank you, ladies...this sweet poem of unconditional love reminded me of you :)

it's on bitches.

this weekend will be my first weekend back to craig county since the fall. i am psyched for this. duh. cause like, if you couldn't tell from last fall...it is another of my most favorite places ever. ever. ever.
so i'm gonna go down this way....
and around this way...

and maybe they will let me use to kitchen equipment again like last year! yea!

but. i hope i don't murder any precious snails this camp season. i still feel preeeetty bad about this little guy. i crushed his life (literally) about five minutes after we took this picture. he was so cute and sweet and snailing along like snails do and then CRUNCH he died. under my butt cheek. i think it was the left one. anyhoo...here's to another year!!!

i wish that i could be an outlaw...

merlefest is coming soon. warm weather + yard work= bluegrass. that is how i roll on yancey street. will this weekend allow me to begin another round of making my neighbors think i'm a weird-o country bumpkin?! let's hope so!

there is a HILARIOUS story about me at 19, this song, the repeat button on a stereo, a ride that forgot to pick me up and a bottle of jack daniels. ok. that pretty much is the story. but it is waaaay better when my old roommate tells it.

being a grown up rules.

tax time = tax return (as long as i continue to not make a significant amount of money, which is looking to be my lifelong trend if i want to like, care about the world and stuff). and i am so fricking excited about spending my lovely hard earned (or hard deprived? withheld?) money on some fantastical home (well yard, really) improvements!!!

i have some super, duper plans on turning my little house into the bungalow decorated, recycled material, sustainable haven it sooo deserves to be...but i'll tell you about that later ;)

main priority of focus this spring: massive flower garden. i am going to turn the sunny side of my house into a flower patch. i buy TONS of flowers in the summer, pretty much always have fresh flowers in my house so now i save money and have a lovely view coming down the street!!! BUT i am going all out. best flowers money can buy, hence using tax money surplus.

cattle fence. since winter bombarded my back yard with snow, the horrid kudzu and debris in the yard has become somewhat manageable looking. plans for chainsawing the crap out of more of the yard and expanding the fence for my little pooches to have lots of luscious running space will go into full effect as soon as weather permits.

and finally, attempt to save and exploit longest life possible from back deck with a nice pressure wash and new stain. it is a lovely deck and i want to keep it up. it is my favorite place to be in the spring/summer...especially at the night with the stars a shining!!!
yea! i am so grown up i cannot stand it. alert alert!!! even more grown up action taken by me: these projects have been allotted after i put most of my return into savings. gosh. look at me now.

shameless plug

this winter i decided to join a local csa. i frequent the community market but i wanted something that would challenge me in the kitchen and by golly did i get my wish granted. i also have never eaten so many potatoes in my life...but anyhoo...here is my shameless plug:
please, please, PLEASE go check out their website. this mostly volunteer run, in the smack dab middle of the city, friendly, warm, feel good and snuggly each week place is a new fav.
each week i receive an email like the one below...i research the items i am unfamiliar with, seek out some recipes then i pick up my bag of goodies and the fun begins. and i am for real about the potato thing...i have enough soup to last a year. which is awesome!!!
although i look forward to my summer of self sufficiency (hopefully) i can proudly say i haven't bought general produce at the grocery store in months. lemons and limes (use sunkist-union approved!) are the only thing i have been purchasing (with the reg's like cheese and milk and yogurt)
i love, love, LOVE my csa. i love, love, LOVE the volunteers. check it out. find one in your area and i dare you to challenge me on potato soup recipes.

green peace.

i never really thought i would be one of those peeps that was waaay into gardening, but alas, i am. I AM SO FRICKIN EXCITED ABOUT MY GARDEN THIS YEAR I CANNOT STAND TO WAIT UNTIL MAY. MAY!!!
i volunteered to help at this thing last year in my old job and was given a gift card to barnes & noble. i knew right away i wanted to buy a gardening book and i waited and waited. i went to b & n last weekend, took off my coat, sat on the floor and explored the garden books. the one i decided on kicks ass!
so now my dreams are full of these diagrams...i space out into visions of canning tomatoes and beans and peppers and cucumbers...my quest for simple living is coming along quite nicely and i feel less stress and complications with each plan i make that is striving towards more self sufficiency and less corporate consumption.
maybe i miss my hippie college. i know i am stir crazy and having a tough winter. but the prospect of summer eats that came from my yard 20 ft away just gets me all giddy. wook at da whittle pwants and weeves!!!
good news: with tax money, my backyard fence will expand for more animal play AND will construct a giant cage for my garden to deter the biggest groundhog in lynchburg doesn't get into my stash this year. JOY!

kitty monster.

my friend took this picture many, many, many years ago and it is my kitty monster, rup-rhett. the dude that took it owns a bar and sends out invites for all these bar things and one day there was my rupey!
it is pretty much the greatest picture of him ever (despite the presence of an ex-bf in the shot, bleghh) he's all slim and trim and young and sly and sweet and badass and mischievous and sultry looking. i love this little jerk. today he is much fatter and has a hard time climbging onto things because of his lower region and it's excessive weight. the neighbor asked me if he was a "regular cat" a few months ago. and indeed, he is not. but not in the way the neighbor meant. i think.

it's been a long week.

and we all know i still have a thing for stringy haired hippie boys. still.
!
he makes me want to sit in a corner booth in a smoke filled bar and listen to a mexican cover band of nirvana...(actually happened to me once, minus the diego luna part)
look at his little (giant) fro!!!!!
thank you, diego luna, for being so extra hot.

so it goes.

i have had kurt vonnegut on the brain since i finished slaughterhouse 5 last week. i found myself staying up to late with weary eyelids because i did not want to leave his words each night...

it makes me sad to think of all of the close mindedness that has kept others away from his unbelievably touching and raw stories...and i admit sheepishly i am guilty of some form of close mindedness lately...but the spell now is broken!
towards the end of the novel is this picture and quote. it took my breath away and calmed me and excited me and put me at peace, almost immediately...

now if only i could find the perfect frame...

love to hate you.

holy moses. imagine my surprise as i was catching up on my celebrity gossip today and i find THIS. john mayer, sans shirt, on the cover of rolling stone magazine. SWOON. so of course i read the article and i have the same. exact. reaction. as i do to him EVERY time. i am wrinkling my nose and drooling at the same time. turned off and on simultaneously. his pictures are so effing hot but then again LOOK at them....ewww dirty shirt, over styled hair, a wife beater? how is it that some men take these things and make them UBERsexy? it is not fair and celebratory at. the. same. time. ahhh!!!! i love to hate you john mayer!!!!!

read it. it's super gross and he says vagina like a million times and his lips look bigger than ever but geeeez. cruel and immensely satisfying world you have created, god.

(and he is right, continuum is waaay better than battle studies but i may or may not be sitting on my back porch staring at the stars in the cold enjoying a smoke listening to certain tracks on bs, namely 1, 4 & 5, on repeat. maybe. it is a possibility)

jgl keeps. getting. better.

so i am usually the one who never watches that awesome new movie because i kinda really hate romantic comedies and every time i give in and i get angry and sometimes cry (exhibit A: he's just not that into you) BUT. joseph gordon-levitt is on my top five hottest babes ever list (despite the fact that my bff keeps reminding me he's prolly 5'5"-stop bff h! stop!!!)

anyhoo, i pretty much squealed with delight when he did this dance sequence in the film and kept the netflix for a week and watched just this part over and over again. if the world were filled with more movies with hot guys in dance sequences we would all lead more satisfying lives. fact.

icky poo puppies...

sigh.

my mom has been fostering five puppies for the past few weeks. they are so effing cute i can't stand it. mom is keeping one but today, sadly, they start to go to their new homes...

this one i call wrinkles and he was my favorite. puppies just make you feel squishy and warm and happy and all seems right with the world.
i bought a new camera (woohooo!) and took so many pictures of the puppies it was a little pathetic. but my time with the puppies was lovely. on christmas, i took each one upstairs to snuggle separately...

they are each so different and unique and sweet and playful and ekkk! puppies!

i think we should all learn a lesson here as the new year approaches: find time to stop and snuggle the puppies. being squishy and warm and happy and all seems right with the world is something i can sure use more of...dunno about you...

so happy together...

i went to lowe's on black friday because i needed to buy a sliding glass door and now i am a grown up and get excited about buying doors. lame. AND because a week earlier i was setting my sights on the current object of my affection...my new crockpot. the dude at lowe's told me to "wait" (wink wink) until black friday to buy it and i am super glad i did. i got that beauty for ten bucks.
so far we have made some pretty banging soups. next week i am going to make a beef stew and i can't wait. there is even a recipe for ribs in the manual. RIBS. did you know you can make RIBS in a crockpot? score.

so i wanted you to know how happy i have been since i acquired my crockpot. i was vying for one for a looong time and now we can live a long, prosperous, warm, slow cooked future together.

my sincere apology...

dear kraft macaroni & cheese,
i have been unfaithful. i haven't been not eating mac & cheese like i said i have been, i have been trying the other brands of mac & cheese i have purchased without you knowing. i am sorry. i'm not really sure how it got to his point...i know last year i honestly and truly did stop eating all mac & cheese...there was that bridesmaids dress and all those damn weddings and the reunion and i really did stop eating all noodles. it was a sad time for me. but i have been eating mac & cheese again for a while now...but just not you, kraft. i got sucked into reading the ingredients and let's face it, yours are scary and complicated. i usually hit up the natural food aisle first and i got duped into that cute little bunny on the annie's box. but that bunny box tastes like crap and now i am stuck with four more boxes to suffer through. i deserve it though. you have never let me down, you've given me rugrats and batman shaped pastas. i promise once i finish this disappointment that is annie's i am done with that pretentious bunny. i will only reach for you from now on. i hope you can find a way to forgive me and that we can get past this and live a long, full life together. not having parts of my body decompose adequately from additives you may contain that could unnaturally preserve my guts is something i am willing to do for you.
love always and forever, xoxoxo

hopelessly devoted.

my newest addition to the household is a yellow labrador is named zephyr, aka, zeezee. she is a mess. she's clumsy, blond, squishy...a lot like me. i am a sucker for the disenfranchised and zeezee is one of these. she was abandoned by these jerks that had her from puppy to 10 months. she has a bit of a malfunction in her lady parts and has to take medication daily (which she loves to take-it's like her doggy candy) but other than that, you wouldn't know she has any physical issues. she is a spaz but she's still a puppy. so this former family's desertion really did a number on zeezee. she has severe attachment issues. my schedule recently changed slightly and two days a week i go to work super early. on the nights i got to bed super early she kinda freaks out, stays up all night acting nervous and flips out (literally) when i come home to let her out in the mid morning. i've taken many trips where she has been under the supervision of my dad and she is generally cool with this but when i am home she is all over me all the time.

sometimes it drives me crazy. when i put on shoes and socks she is right behind me, like she is trying to help but in turn, only creating a hazard. she pummels down the stairs with me, at times almost knocking me over. not good. she MUST watch me in the bathroom. i am serious. the doorknob didn't work for a while on the bathroom door so i have at least trained her to stand at the door. it is not my favorite thing but it's better than her trying to get on my lap. if i take a bath, she rests her face on the side of the tub. kinda creepy at first, but again, used to it. if i sit on the couch she is always touching me or under foot. she constantly seeks my approval and guidance. she is always looking out the window for me to return. in the bed, her arm/leg/head/entire 70lb body is always draped over mine. always. ALWAYS.

i am extremely empathetic towards her because she is a sweetheart and i understand why she acts the way she does. her desperation and devotion are signs that i am training her correctly, even when she almost rips my arm off at the sight of a squirrel/leaf/rock at the park. i have had her about 6 months and she has come a looong way.

zeezee represents everything i am not (or was at one time in the past and worked diligently to change). she is needy, anxious when alone, she tries waaay to hard to get the cats that hate her to like her. (chasing and humping things 1/10 of your size is a poor choice, i tell her but she continues to try)...she is super touchy and insecure. her favorite song is "party in the usa" by miley cyrus. in people those are all of the things i despise. if i portray those qualities i feel weak and immediately remedy the situation.

but overall, she gets better everyday. i love the crap out of this dog and think that as much as she represents all that isn't me, her loyalty towards me is admirable. she plays fair with smaller dogs (most of the time) and has an unbelievably in tune conscience. she is goofy and kind but she will act like she is going to rip your face off if you come into my house and she doesn't know or like you. this is a plus considering i am not in a yuppie neighborhood and i live alone.

so anytime this mess of a pooch makes me want to scream i remember that i envy her unconditional love and loyalty. i can do no wrong to her and she lives completely and utterly for me. and her kong. and this is nice.
