that thing.

npr reminded me this week of how much i adore lauren hill. her album came out days after we all moved into the dorms and the beats got us dressed for all the cute new college boys...too bad she never put out more music at the time. i LOVE this early hip-hop of my life. summer playlist fo sho.

aaand how amazing is this video?!

growing up.

today i am finally going to put all of my precious baby green babies outside. they have been living in the guest room and i have been feeding them and talking to them and loving them. i am sad to let them go but i hope they grow strong and like the outside life!

semi vacay

so i am spending the week in portsmouth for training. i hate going to training and i feel this one will probably be more beneficial to my old job that my current one...but whatevs. i talked my way out of this training in snoozeville, va to the beach location! wahoo!
i have spent a tremendous amount of time researching the area so i can: 1. see this guy in the awesome colonial garb, 2. not get shot; there are some sketchy cities at the beach, and 3. eat like a queen all week long on the government. wassup!
i cannot wait to smell the ocean and be somewhere different. the salty smell is gonna get me ready for the heat. (which btw is taking it's sweet time getting here. urgh.) i love to explore places on my own and the drive and the place i have never been and the cable tv at the hotel are making me excited!
(and i get to visit my cousin that lived in washington when i lived in seattle! yea!)

it's on bitches.

this weekend will be my first weekend back to craig county since the fall. i am psyched for this. duh. cause like, if you couldn't tell from last fall...it is another of my most favorite places ever. ever. ever.
so i'm gonna go down this way....
and around this way...

and maybe they will let me use to kitchen equipment again like last year! yea!

but. i hope i don't murder any precious snails this camp season. i still feel preeeetty bad about this little guy. i crushed his life (literally) about five minutes after we took this picture. he was so cute and sweet and snailing along like snails do and then CRUNCH he died. under my butt cheek. i think it was the left one. anyhoo...here's to another year!!!

scream it from the walls.

remember this album? love it. just burned it from a friend and i have been jamming out. this album reminds me of the summer that my old bff had just gotten her license. she could drive way before anyone else (she was a year older) and we had a boom box in the back seat because her less than stellar car had a broken radio. we, of course, also had no ac so the windows were always down. it. was. awesome.

those summer nights were full of mischief and excitement. funny, i am not friends with any of the people i hung out with that summer anymore...not sure what half of them are doing now...except the boy i hated the most...now he's married to my best friend, has earned best friend status himself and i see him at least once a week! hahaha...

as awesome as a 15 year olds summer night can be i'll take buying my own beer, sitting on my own porch and listening to this album on my computer any. damn. day.

sweet smells.

i bought a hyacinth plant a few weeks ago. i keep it in my bedroom cause they are my favorite flowers and the purple looks super awesome against my artichoke green. it has doubled in size and the fragrance of the plant is overwhelming. my room smells like heaven when i enter, not sleeping dog. another set of bulbs i planted last year sprouted out in front of my house despite the debris that was above it.

i think the hyacinths are trying to tell me something...they are determined and not wasting any time being fabulous. wise little plants.

i wish that i could be an outlaw...

merlefest is coming soon. warm weather + yard work= bluegrass. that is how i roll on yancey street. will this weekend allow me to begin another round of making my neighbors think i'm a weird-o country bumpkin?! let's hope so!

there is a HILARIOUS story about me at 19, this song, the repeat button on a stereo, a ride that forgot to pick me up and a bottle of jack daniels. ok. that pretty much is the story. but it is waaaay better when my old roommate tells it.

it's all happening...

despite the fact that there are some (LYING SOBs) weather persons out there predicting more rain/snow dramarama: i am in spring mode and nothing will ruin it for me. i have sufficiently blown half of my tax money on spring project materials. i now have a wheelbarrow. my guest room will soon become a mini greenhouse. i will spend lots of time laying on the deck in the dark.

but most importantly...music shall now mean something different (as will be evidenced by my spring/summer inspired tunes).
here is my first choice. sure, this song is super fun to walk the dog too, even fun to chair dance to at work...but how much awesomer will it be heading up route 311 to my favorite place in the world with the windows down in flip flops once officially changing my attire to dresses and skirts only in say, may? SO MUCH AWESOMER.

whilst walking back up the hill from my car post lunch today, i busted a mini sweat. heLLLOOooo march (soon to be spring)!!!

p.s. lately, i have been a bit nostalgic for the days when i too, lived a more bohemian lifestyle. going into work late, hanging out even later, always having tons of cash on hand, the camaraderie with the restaurant co-workers you have...it was such a fun time. but then i remember after 7+ years of that shit i wanted to go postal at every shift and it is nice to have health insurance.
